The Animal Caregivers’ Support Circle

The ACSC is a monthly gathering for those who are:

•  Caregiving for an animal friend who has special needs
• Anticipating the loss of an animal companion that has been given a life-limiting diagnosis, or is aging
• Grieving the death of an animal friend, recent or in the past 

 Within this confidential circle a safe, caring and supportive environment is created for you to share your journey.

Holiday Fundraiser Success!

The Holiday AHELPer Appreciation Party and Reception was held on December 15, at  Northwest Cellars. The celebration included selling AHELP-labeled wines:

“White Whiskers White” Adagio

which AHELP received 40% of  the purchased proceeds from these wines.

We are excited about the changes being made in the coming year and the continuation of our successful programs and services. We are the first organization of our kind in the U.S.  Welcome to over 60 new members we met at the recently completed community events season. Just beyond the September 18 -2nd anniversary of the inaugural workshop, we will kickoff this year and announce our 2013 goals. We will present information to encourage your further  involvement as a member of our AHELP community!

 TO KNOW about ANIMAL HOSPICE and PET LOSS:

What is HOSPICE CARE? My beloved animal is not ready to die yet…

• It is a particular type of palliative care that we use once guardians and their care team accept that the end is near.

So then you ask, “what is PALLIATIVE CARE?”

• Comfort care that  is focused on relief of emotional, spiritual, and physical symptoms in your animal AND your family. 
• This approach can be requested from your vet as soon as the diagnosis of a life limiting condition is made or quality of life begins to decline.
• Euthanasia is an important tool in the palliative care toolbox! We encourage guardians to plan an appropriately timed euthanasia to reduce the chance of your questions, “too early” or “too late”.

 HOW CAN HOSPICE HELP YOU?

FOR THE GUARDIAN: 

• Confidence- that you did what you could do for your animal friend after a life well lived.
• Empowerment- to make the best possible decisions under the advice of a team they trust, and then act on them once the time comes.
• Healthy grief and bereavement- healing from the loss of your special friend.

FOR YOUR ANIMAL:

• Comfort- treatment decisions may be based upon curing the illness but the priority is comfort over pursuit of the cure.
• Dignity and peace- you and your providers are constantly focused on quality of life so that dignity and a peaceful ending is the likely outcome.

Due to unforeseen circumstances we must change the format of the Thursday, April 12 event. We hope to offer this program at a future date, when we expect to present Sheila Wells (Wellspringsk9.com) and Lori Stevens (SeattleTtouch.com)  who will show us  bodywork and massage techniques to improve dogs’ quality of life.  

The new program is an educational webinar in-service for AHELPer volunteers and friends. This will not be related to massage and bodywork and will not be presented by Lori and Sheila. The AHELP Project also hopes to offer these webinars in the future as community-wide educational events; currently they are open to all through IAAHPC.org on twice-monthly Sunday evenings.
